As of 2003, more than 1.1 million students in the United States were being homeschooled (United States Department of Education report), and by 2006, according to a more recent study done by the National Home Education Research Institute, this number had doubled to approximately 2 million children. Why are so many families opting to homeschool? Two of the most common reasons parents give for homeschooling are religious beliefs and family values, but there are many others.

A marketing research firm, The Barna Group, Ltd., reports that 91 percent of home school parents say they are Christian, with 49 percent classifying themselves as "born again Christians." Their report is based on seven independent, national random samples taken by phone in 2000-01. Half of all home school parents in the surveys reported being "somewhere in-between" politically conservative and liberal.

Those parents who homeschool for religious reasons often use a packaged, Christian based curriculum purchased locally or online. Many of these parents are concerned with the teaching of evolution in schools, as well as secular influences from peers and teachers.

Another frequently given reason for home school is concern with the nation's quality of education. Many are concerned about test scores and/or don't feel the schools do a good enough job preparing their children for college or jobs. As the homeschooling movement progresses, we see more homeschooling for other reasons as well.

A growing number of parents homeschool because they want a holistic or natural education for their children. Some of these parents use packaged curriculum, but more of them use the John Holt inspired method of unschooling (child led learning), meaning the parent still teaches, but the child's interests determine what is taught. Others combine both methods, using an eclectic approach.

The freedom to learn at one's own pace is another motivating factor in the

decision to homeschool. Some students are accelerated learners in one or all subjects, while others need more time.

For many parents, a primary concern is emotional and physical safety of their children, noting that their children can have a safer and more positive social experience through resources such as community and/or church groups, volunteering and other activities.

On the same line with bullyism, a child's self-esteem may also weigh heavily in the decision to home school. Studies show that overall homeschooled kids are more confident than their formally schooled peers.

Then there are parents who homeschool children who are medically fragile, while others homeschool because the school is pushing to medicate children with ADHD who learn better without the distractions of a classroom. Children with special needs, such as learning disabilities, often do much better at home. In fact, learning disabilities often disappear.

Some families who live in rural areas are motivated by the convenience of schooling at home or have no other option. Others homeschool because their children or teens have researched this and presented a good case to their parents.

Many who opt to homeschool like the fact that those who have been homeschooled tend to be far more active in their communities and civics, do better on college SATs and have stronger leadership skills than their conventionally schooled peers. Of course, many parents choose to homeschool for various combinations of these reasons and/or for other reasons.
